The Ruby Henton Performing Arts Centre

Mrs Ruby May Victoria Henton (nee Logan) was born on January 7, 1916. At the age of seventeen, Ruby Henton began her teaching career as a student-teacher. The following year, she enrolled at St. Joseph’s Teachers College where she received her certification and began a fifty-year teaching career. She was a dedicated and effective educator and mentor who was known and deeply respected for her ability to successfully prepare students for the rigorous Common Entrance Examinations while teaching at the Harbour View Primary school. She is immortalized in the hearts and minds of those she touched as an educator. Ruby Henton was a stickler for discipline, but her compassion, talent, wisdom, and kindness are all part of the legacy she left behind. In 1975 she was honored for her exemplary teaching career by the Harbour View community in Jamaica.

In addition to her success as a professional, Mrs Henton was a beloved wife and mother. In 1955, she met and married Alford George Henton. Mr. & Mrs Henton had three children Garth, Paul and Andrea (deceased, 1997). Sadly, Mrs Henton was left to raise her children alone following the untimely death of Alford in 1965. Despite the hardship, she pressed on as a devoted mother and provider as she prioritized the lives of her children with grace, dignity, and courage.

In 1978, Mrs Henton relocated to Brooklyn, New York where she taught at First Impressions Nursery School for many years.

Mrs Henton’s calling was education, but her passion was music. She was an immensely talented pianist. Throughout her life, she shared her love of music with ministries such as Grace Gospel Hall in Harbour View, Kingston, Jamaica and Grace Church of the First Born in Brooklyn, New York where she served as music director. In addition, she briefly served as a choir director at Atlanta Metropolitan Church of God in Atlanta, Georgia. Her contributions as a musician and educator were underscored by her commitment to providing private music lessons to students in Jamaica and in the United States.

Ruby May Victoria Henton passed away on December 31, 1997, at the age of 81. Her powerful legacy as an educator and a musician now lives on in her son, acclaimed music producer and musician, Paul Henton aka Computer Paul, and the countless lives that will be impacted through the Ruby Henton Performing Arts Centre.
